A unique process now developed in Europe. Below are the datasheets which show some characteristics obtained on the various devulcanized rubbers.

Devulcanized products & technology

Rubber scraps or used rubber cannot simply be melted down and reused as many polymers can be. That is because rubber has been cross-linked; most of the time with sulfur in a process called vulcanization invented by Charles Goodyear in 1839. Vulcanization imparts needed mechanical properties but is not easily reversed. Devulcanization consists in a selective breakage of chemical cross-linking bonds (often sulfur bonds) over polymeric chain bonds.

Devulcanization processes are known since before the Second World War. But, until the beginning 2000’s, they all decreased drastically the mechanical properties of the recycled rubber and most of them used dangerous chemicals, most of which are now limited by the European REACH regulations.

In 2003, Tyromer set up a continuous process using inert CO2 in its supercritical state. Phenix-Technologies soon understood the industrial potential of this process and was the first Tyromer’s licensee (November 2013).

But in most cases, supercritical CO2 is not even required. The DEVULC project, supported by the European Commission (H2020 programme), led to a novel rubber devulcanization process based on activated extrusion, with the scope of building a demo plant in the EU, extending the process to all technical rubbers at industrial scales and creating activities based on this process all over Europe.

This process:

- is continuous and well adapted to industrial environments;
- is safe and environmentally sustainable, and complies with current European REACH regulations ; in most cases no chemicals or solvents are needed;
- provides a regenerated rubber which can be recycled as a good quality raw material for the rubber industry;
- is cost-efficient and financially viable and offers a number of business opportunities.

Recycling rubber scraps using our devulcanization process leads to:

- A very good quality raw material, at lower price, with less price fluctuation, low carbon foot print;
- Energy savings, making rubber consumes about 30 MWh/ton while burning it provides less than 8 MWh/ton; rubber recycling allows to save about 15 MWh/ton!
- New products such as TPEV, a mixture of plastic and devulcanized rubber.

Micronized products & technology

Phenix-technologies is specialized in the industry of wholesale (business to business) of industrial equipment for processing used rubber, including scrap tyres. Completely new machines have been developed such as microniser, powderisers, granulators or electrostatic cleaning units, some of which have been patented.

Phenix-Technologies can process rubber scraps (production rejects, end-of-life products…) by size-reduction.

The machinery business activity is divided as follows:

- Trade: Sale of machinery, usually designed in Phénix but manufactured by third parties, and sale of complete turnkey workshop. Phénix has sold nearly 200 machines which are currently working in good conditions.
- Feasibility Tests: Made by machines and small processing lines installed on our premises.

Our machines reduce the granules in rubber crumb to a diameter less than 1 mm to obtain 350 µ without nitrogen use. Thanks to our technology we can produce tons with only few kilo Watt per hour.

TPE/TPeV products & technology

Thermoplastic elastomer vulcanizates are obtained by mixing our devulcanized rubber with TPeVs are really interesting materials because of their versatility. They combine the advantages of rubbers to those of plastic materials and offer a wide panel of properties. Therefore, depending on the required final product, it is possible to adjust the TPeV formulation to answer the specifications.

- Simplified processing
- Can be processed by extrusion, injection molding or blow molding
- Ease of scraps and waste recycling
